If you can’t do that, then you might as well not even have a multiplayer component. Yet every year we see AAA titles release that fail to adequately master this part of the equation. You could really only get into a matchmaking queue for strikes and the Crucible. Everything else in the game required you to go onto one of the “looking-for-group” websites or apps and roll the dice. While fans banding together to support a title is commendable, it’s not okay that much of the time this was the only way to actually play the game. Well, that’s too bad because there were practically no people looking to do the same thing. Even if you wanted to do the more popular Raids or Lighthouse runs, the stipulations people put on joining their group became ridiculous.
Should games like Destiny be allowed to omit matchmaking?
Destiny vault of glass raid matchmaking The team assigned to the Mars left portal will use the sink-plate and defend from incoming enemies. A weekly update from Destiny developers Bungie has revealed that the studio is considering adding matchmaking to their end-game raids. Yet, we understand its limitations.
Destiny 2 is also rumored to have added matchmaking for raids. This might sound like a rather useless addition but it has potential to alleviate some of the issues that fans have with the way.
Nov 3, I’ve had very similar thoughts about the whole Matchmaking thing in the Destiny series, and I thought I’d chime in with some ideas that I’ve observed over time as Destiny has evolved. I come from a very heavy MMO background as well so the idea of the game not having chat or an LFG system built into the game was baffling to me and a huge deterrent for me enjoying the game during Year 1. Over time, as I played the game more and actually got more invested in it, I started to try to understand the why behind certain decisions when it comes to matchmaking.
Some of the decisions they make downright make the game more frustrating for a player, especially on PC. However, as you mentioned in the OP, it does line up with their philosophy of what Destiny should be like. This presents unique challenges as there are some positives that come from the situation they have made as well as the negatives I’m sure many of us have all encountered.
The main thing that sticks out to me is that having the player leave their comfort zone somewhat to gain passage into doing a harder activity can lead to bolstering the community as a whole. An example of this could be the original DestinyGAF community. When people realized they couldn’t do the Weekly Heroic Strikes with matchmaking, the first thing they did was jump online and meet some people that they could try it with. There was a lot of failures, but when the successes happened, those players tended to stick together.
The more and more players stuck together after meeting each other was what started the community itself. It only got bigger as people started to lead newer players through content and bring them into the fold.

In one of Destiny’s recent updates it was announced that Bungie is considering making matchmaking for the moment it is very difficult to implement matchmaking into the game but they are working on it. At the moment the only raid is the vault of glass.
Destiny 2[ edit ] Clans have a much larger role in Destiny 2. Players can form clans that include up to Guardians , and create custom clan banners for their clans. Destiny raid matchmaking is still being considered by Bungie
Sep 6, The evolution of Destiny , like that of many long-term online service games, has been a veritable saga. At the same time, of course, Destiny 2 has to relish and reward the relationships that existing players have built with the franchise over the past three years. The first 20 hours: September 5, – by Samit Sarkar Catering to newcomers and veterans alike is a tough balancing act.
Some longtime players are still mad that all their existing gear, which they earned over dozens or hundreds of hours with Destiny, is gone — narrative justification be damned. But that may all end up as water under the bridge.
With the base game feeling like a big step backward from the original Destiny post-Rise of Iron, plenty of people were hoping an expansion would bring changes and new areas that would last for months. When I sat down to review Destiny 2 Warmind, I figured that surely after the outcry over how content-thin Curse of Osiris was that Bungie would have given us a meaty helping of lore, ground, and guns to explore. Destiny 2 Warmind Review: That included some trips to The Tower to decode engrams and some general messing about.
Ana needs your help to reach Rasputin in a Clovis Bray installation on Mars, so she can recover her past and try to utilize Rasputin to help protect humanity. Yes, there are no new enemies here well, except for a Hive Sniper , and you end up fighting the same old Hive, Cabal, Taken, and Fallen. These Hive had little icicles covering them. What little plot there is with Rasputin and Ana Bray is inconsequential, and the whole thing is over and swept under the rug before we really learn anything about either of them.
This is unfortunate because Rasputin has been a mystery ever since the beginning of the original Destiny when you meet a fragment of him in the cosmodrome. The ending is almost majorly unsatisfying and gives the whole thing a feeling of false urgency.

A recent trend in games is forgetting the latter and forcing gamers to bring their own friends to the party. From Raids, to Trials of Osiris, let’s take a look at how one of the world’s best games fails to please. Advanced Warfare for my YouTube channel.
It’s hard not to compare Anthem to Destiny 2 just by the nature of what both games are trying to be. More to the point, though, it seems like the developers want that comparison to be made, especially with the recent announcement on Twitter that Anthem will have matchmaking for its endgame raids. You needn’t have a dedicated progression group; just rely on matchmaking to form a group for.
On these Raids, you need to be at the top of your game and communication is absolutely key in achieving any form of success. Destiny has already received criticism over its matchmaking system in both Crucible and Strike missions, nothing like being level 15 and going up against a team of Guardians ten plus levels higher than you. Lemme tell you something people, you can take on Walkers whilst out on patrol. Go kill it, go to orbit, rinse, repeat. I need to rely on a bunch of strangers who hopefully want to win as much as I do.
People play games to have fun and have a good time.

By Vince Ingenito [Editor’s Note: We’ve been posting our impressions of Destiny since September 3rd. Our scored review was posted on September 18, It attempts to weave threads from many popular genres together into one interconnected tapestry, but your experience will depend entirely upon which of those threads you tug on hardest. Exit Theatre Mode At the very least, it provides blistering firefights and brilliantly crafted worlds to have them in. In fact, the exceptional caliber of its moment-to-moment gameplay is what partially excuses the fact that it never quite realizes its grand design.
For as fun as it is, Destiny just doesn’t fully commit to all of its disparate parts, making it simultaneously many different things, and none of them at all.

Right now, the only way to tackle Destiny’s Raids is to have a group of high-levelled friends who want to get shot in the face repeatedly in the perpetual quest for better gear. That’s right; there’s no matchmaking for Raids – which means it’s impossible to jump in to a raid with a group of strangers for a few arduous hours of shooting.
Never got any of the expansions, so feel free to correct me on things. My argument is that raids in WoW and SWTOR have a form of matchmaking Group Finder that allows people to play a selection of raids from easy to hard difficulty for the older content. I know for SWTOR, the newer raids aren’t included in the Group Finder until later on in the year when people are more geared and experienced with the current expansion. Considering these raids are more complex than VoG and still require people to play their role at a basic level, it’s not like Destiny has to worry about people’s classes considering everyone’s primary method of doing damage is with shooting.
Within that raid, you will also get another reward for getting up to a certain point with a Group Finder group. That way, your group doesn’t have to complete the raid unless you folks decide on it. This is how I personally would like to see a form of matchmaking for raids to be implemented. In this case, VoG normal is legacy. After that, Crota normal mode could be added for possible matchmaking.
So on and so forth. When a person is kicked after deciding to use matchmaking, they get a time penalty and can’t use queue for matchmaking for 30 min – 1 hr. Even have the penalty accrue for repeated kicking. For bonus points, show a wait time to see how long it’ll take to find a replacement. If the player who is deciding to queue or not has done these specific parts of a raid for a week and got the loot, they will get notified that they’ve already completed the part.

Whether or not Bungie eventually gives in and adds it to the game is still up in the air, but in the meantime some resourceful guardians tired of waiting have taken it upon themselves to build tools and forums specifically for the purpose of grouping Destiny players together so they can complete the tougher endgame content. Who knows, you may even find a regular group of folks you enjoy playing with and will have no use for group finders anymore.
Destiny Forums The official Bungie Forums were the first place players swarmed when they realized there was no in game playlist for raids and nightfall strikes. Gamescom in Cologne we were treated to a launch trailer. With a mix of CGI and in-game footage this trailer sets up the high-octane excitement we’ve come to expect from Destiny very well. You can watch it for yourself below: Destiny 2 got a brand-new trailer at Sony’s E3 Keynote on Monday, June 12 that shows the three new classes in action and re-affirming the game’s September 6, release date.
We also learned that gamers that buy the game on Sony systems will receive an exclusive strike, ship, weapon and PVP maps. That’s a compelling reason for guardians to go for PS4 over the other systems, although PC gamers will be the only platform with 4K. Is that enough to persuade gamers to Sony’s systems?
